Presumed Garden Dart. Still awaiting confirmation for this one but the latin name - Euxoa nigricans hints at the darkness of this species. I'm still not sure about its status in Devon but I've not had a whiff of one in sixteen years of trapping...
Will hold on to it for a while if anyone wants to see it. Please text or ring.
Off Mudbank today - 37 Mallard, 1 Dark-bellied Brent Goose, 7 Mediterranean Gulls and a 2cy Yellow-legged Gull. Quiet otherwise.
(presumed) Garden Dart alongside a Heart and Dart for comparison. Can't think what else this could be but have no knowledge of 'super-dark' white-lined Dart or related species.
Scarce Bordered Straw. A bit knackered but my first of the year. The only other immigrant species was a lone Silver Y (unless the numerous Rusty Dot Pearls aren't resident).
Mediterranean Gull - juvenile, green-ringed R2XT. One of seven Meds off Mudbank this afternoon.
2cy Yellow-legged Gull - reasonably confident this is 'old faithful' back again but not at all confident with what's going on moult-wise. A confusing mix of, presumably, three generations of feathers happening, with new (2nd gen?) median and greater coverts, old (juv) p 9/10s? New 2nd/3rd? gen lesser coverts? New, 2nd gen tertials? Could well have got this all wrong and am not pretending to know the first thing about moult in this age class. Any help gladly received.
