Dartmoor Bogs

Lu and I set out early for a long hike on Dartmoor this morning. Back to Belstone for midday as the temperature soared. The Bog Orchids weren't as straight forward to locate as I'd hoped. Everywhere is much drier, so the wet flushes looked completely different to last year. Not sure how they'll cope if the hot weather continues for too long. Four spikes found but we didn't hang around to do too much searching. Interesting to find Heath Spotted Orchids looking fresh, with some still in bud!

Sand Spurrey.

I'm guessing the cooler, wetter climate on Dartmoor means species like Heath Spotted Orchid are in flower far later than those at lower elevations. Flowers on the local pebbled heaths are way past it.

Saw masses of this inch-high Eyebright species. Never did work out which one it was after last year's trip.
