Bird's Wing

Bird's Wing - a garden first for me - it appears to be a pretty scarce moth in Devon.

A nice variety of moths over the last couple of nights. Birding has been really tough with the only noteworthy sightings being a Coal Tit on Orcombe yesterday, second-summer Mediterranean Gull on the beach this morning and a flock of 19 Crossbill near Four Firs yesterday.

Cream-bordered Green Pea

Hemlock Yellow Conch Aethes beatricella

Black-brindled Bell Epinotia signatana.

Middle-barred Minor

Privet Tortrix Clepsis consimilana - above and below.

Crescent Plume Marasmarcha lunaedactyla - one of several on the Maer.

White Plume Moth Pterophorus pentadactyla - Lympstone Common.

Round-leaved Sundew

Not sure if this is Heath Spotted or Common Spotted Orchid - can anyone shed any light?

Clouded Buff - found day-flying on Bicton Common. I've struggled to find them this year.

Beautiful Hook-tip

Garden Mompha Mompha subbistrigella

Fulvous Clothes Moth Tinea semifulvella

European Corn-borer

Small Elephant Hawkmoth

Brown Elm Bell Epinotia abbreviana - above and a darker from below.

Meal Moth

Gold Triangle

Sallow Button Acleris hastiana

Crossbill - one of at least 19 between the model aircraft carpark and Four Firs yesterday.

Sand Martin - Blackhill Quarry.

  1. Hi Matt. Encountered both orchids recently at a local site, and IDs were helpfully provided by online contacts. From what I've learned, yours is Heath Spotted Orchid. Hope I'm right! 😄

  2. Thank you Gav - I'm sure you're right - there are lots of Heath Spotted on the commons. This one looked a bit different but I suspect it's perhaps just not in perfect habitat. It was in a bog and standing alone. The majority of Heath Spotted I see are in drier areas. Thanks again - it's always good to hear from you. All the best. Matt
