White-pinion Spotted

White-pinion Spotted - a supposedly common moth but one that, until today, I've not crossed paths with. Found whilst doing a job up in Somerset.

Not much news today. A stop-off at my favorite Common Spotted Orchid site, at the top of Blackhill Quarry,  was only partially successful . Several plants found but none in flower yet. Birds up there included 1 Red Kite, 6+ Sand Martins and a singing Cuckoo.
Red Kites were also noted north of Ilminster (from the car) and from the back garden at 1315 - a bird heading high west.

Red Kite - low east over Blackhill Quarry.

Sand Martin - Blackhill Quarry. Numbers seem to be down this year. Just 6+ for me this afternoon.

Broad-bodied Chaser - Blackhill Quarry.

  1. Nice to see a moth on the blog Matt - and one I haven't seen either. Devon distribution map is here: https://devonmoths.uk/index.php?bf=19570 As you say, common ... but not to either of us! Meanwhile, I think I have the female partner for your male Br-B Chaser doing loops of my garden at the moment - a gorgeous golden colour in the sun. Hope all's well .. Nick

  2. Thanks Nick - seems to be quite a few BB Chasers around at the moment - as you say, the females are stunning. Hope you and the family are all keeping well. Look forward to following your trapping exploits this summer. All the best. Matt.
