It's warms the heart to see the Heath Spotted Orchids starting to flower on the pebbled heaths. I found quite a few on a lengthy walk this morning. I also found a few Early Marsh Orchids, but they're still a little way off flowering. Another week or two before it starts to get really good. Not much bird-wise up there but a couple Crossbills and 3 Kestrels were noteworthy, and I'm continuing to discover new Firecrest territories. A probable Purple Heron flew south-east late in the evening. Viewed from Withycombe Raleigh Common, looking across, beyond Bystock. Too distant to clinch but was noticeably more lightweight than Grey Heron, with apparently shallower wingbeats. No obvious contrast on upper wings so appearing all dark.
The only other news from today - a Red Kite east at 0940, from the back garden, and the singing male Sedge Warbler remains on territory on Orcombe Point.
Early Marsh Orchid.
