New Year's Day

Ring-necked Parakeet - one of three near the entrance to Green Farm (Maer Valley).

A check of a few sites in Exmouth today and a good few miles walked. Off the seafront - at least 4 Eider and a distant Great Northern Diver. Very little moving in much less windy conditions first thing.
A quick scoot around the top fields of Orcombe Point produced 1 Peregrine, 1 Little Egret, 15 Linnets, c40 Skylarks, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Stonechat, 4 Snipe, 1 Grey Wagtail, 2 Rock Pipits, 4+ Song Thrushes and at least 7 Cirl Buntings (slurry pit).
Nearby, in Maer Valley, at the entrance to Green Farm - 1 Little Egret, 3 Ring-necked Parakeets and 2 Stock Doves. I checked the usual stretch of woodland along Castle Lane and flushed a single Woodcock. Also a Treecreeper there.
On the Imperial rugby ground - 1 Meadow Pipit, c185 Dark-bellied Brent Geese and 12 Pale-bellied Brent Geese. On the adjacent recreation ground - the flock of 4 Cirl Buntings and a single Stonechat. A flock of c160/170+ Starlings was along Marine Way.
Off Mudbank - counts of 40 Mallard, 150+ Pintail, c80 Wigeon, 82 Shelduck, 2 Red-breasted Mergansers, 10+ Great Crested Grebes and a female Goldeneye. Off Shelly Beach - 2 more Red-breasted Mergansers and 1 Peregrine.
A walk around Phear Park revealed 1 Common Sandpiper, 1 Redshank, 3 Grey Wagtails, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Firecrest and 3 Redwings.

Great to bump into Roger, Liz, Rick and Clare down at the Imperial today. Also lovely to see Liz and Chris.
Chuffed that my good mate Paul has got his blog up and running. A link to 'Proper Gander' can be found in my blog list and here

 Starling flock - Marine Way.

Female Goldeneye - Duckpond. A relief to see this morning's bird after no Goldeneye sightings for weeks. Might this be the only wintering bird on the Exe this year?

Common Sandpiper and Redshank - Phear Park (in the brook).
