Crescent

Crescent - a good moth. A marshland species that I wasn't really expecting to get here. It has presumably wandered down from the north end of the estuary. I used to catch them up at Sandygate in my in-laws' garden.

I did Orcombe Point this morning, having been down in Cornwall the last couple of days.  It was pretty quiet but I managed to record 4+ Willow Warbler, 1 Tree Pipit, 3 Dunlin, 3 Whitethroat, 2+ Chiffchaff, 1 Blackcap, 7+ Common Tern and 1 Mediterranean Gull. Bullfinches were very vocal, with at least 5 birds present, presumably indicative of successful breeding.
There were 90+ Sandwich Tern off the Imperial plus a single Wheatear on the grass there, but the highlight was bumping in to Chris Townend - really good to see him again!
The moth trap was quite full but the only immigrants were 1 Dark Swordgrass, 3 Rusty Dot Pearl and 2 Rush Veneer. A single Crescent was by far the best moth otherwise, as I still try to brush up on my micros. Please let me know as and when I mis-identify stuff.

Duncan, Will and Jules after their epic ride form John O'Groats to Land's End for the 'Rainbow Living' charity. Well done - a fantastic effort!

  2. Thanks Andrew - was leaning more that way but still feeling very rusty and unsure on the moths. Please keep letting me know when I mis-identify stuff. I've borrowed the micro moths guide (Sterling/Parsons/Lewington) from my brother-in-law and absolutely love it. It's going on my Christmas list for sure! Cheers,
    Matt
