WTE

One of the White-tailed Eagles from the Isle of Wight release scheme flew north over Blackhill Quarry this afternoon. Quite exciting!

Pale Pinion. also trapped last night - 1 Clouded Drab, 10 Common Quaker, 2 Hebrew Character and 6 Early Grey.

Clouded Drab

Variation in Common Quakers.

Hebrew Character

Early Grey

Little Ringed Plover

Four Pale-bellied Brent Geese joined 26 Dark-bellied birds on Maer Rocks. Offshore a count of 14 Great Crested Grebes was made easier by flat calm water.

My first Wheatear of the spring was on the dung heap, on Orcombe Point, this morning. Otherwise very quiet with just 2 Chiffchaffs and a few Pied Wagtails.

  1. Thanks for the call Matt - Very envious. Great bird to see locally and hopefully the start of many sightings!

  2. Hi Chris - I'm sure the Otter will be graced with one in the not too distant future. These birds seem to be covering a lot of ground! All the best. Matt

  3. Many thanks for the call, Matt. Dashed down to the Clyst VP but no sign over or on the Exe, looks like it just carried on north. I'm sure some day we'll have a long stayer, maybe eventually even a breeding pair - and some day it'll get on my garden list!

    1. Hi Tim - gutted you didn't get it from there. Terry had it fly across the river - Lympstone to Kenton 'ish. I'm sure the Exe will be a favored site in years to come. All the best. Matt

  4. Nice one Matt - are you sure it wasn’t a kestrel? They are easily confused and misidentified 😂!

    1. Ha! Looks more like a barn door than a Kestrel! Thanks for that Neil - fingers crossed it doesn't take too many of your fish! All the best. Matt

  7. Congrats on the eagle, Matt- what a corker! Waiting for a change in wind direction to get my first Wheatear-usually get a few on my patch. Some nice moths too.

  8. Thanks Neil - almost got it on me Exmouth list today but it wasn't quite to be. Out-gunned by the Warren again... Hopefully more WTEs to come - the Exe looks perfect for them. I'm sure the Wheatears will be along soon. No migrants at all on Orcombe Point today. All the best. Matt
