Tuftie Early Purples

A look off Mudbank this afternoon produced 53 Whimbrel, 1 Grey Plover, 1 Dunlin, 40 Bar-tailed Godwits, 1 Dark-bellied Brent Goose, 16 Sandwich Terns, 2 Great Crested Grebes, 1 Stock Dove, 6 Black-headed Gulls and 70+ Starlings.
On Monday, a pair of Tufted Ducks on Bystock Pool was my first record in Exmouth in over a year. The drake was displaying to the female. A male Firecrest was in song up there and at least 2 Crossbills flew over.

Spring Beauty is flowering on the Maer but it's not looking as healthy as it did last year, with some discoloration of the leaves.

Green-winged Orchids - Orcombe Point.

The Early Purple Orchids are looking good in Veiges Plantation.

  1. Thanks again for the directions, Matt. I nearly talked myself out of it as I felt stupid travelling all the way there to see a plant but it turned out to be a great day. Saw the Spring Beauty then visited Woodbury Castle for tree rot hole rearing material (flies) and Ashclyst on the way home. Nice to see Spring Beauty again and go so far from home. Felt weird as I have become very local since covid and it isn't a bad thing.

    1. And it was nice to see/smell the sea for the second time in a week!

  2. Hi Andrew - apologies - only just seen this. So chuffed you had a worthwhile trip. I rarely travel outside of Exmouth - it's definitely good to stay local. The trouble is you can go a long time without seeing people and certain species. It's good to get out and about now and again! All the very best. Matt
