Sea

Just a couple Willow Warblers on Orcombe first thing, before the wind strengthened. I did a couple watches from the raised beach huts and recorded 1 Dunlin, 28 Whimbrel (including a flock of 19), 11 Fulmars, 1+ Great Northern Diver, at least 13 Sandwich Terns, 2 Common Scoters, 2 Shelduck, 10+ Common Gulls, 1 'commic' tern, 20+ auk sp, 10+ hirundine sp, 2 Swallows, 60+ Manx Shearwaters (all this afternoon) and, best of all, a Hobby, low across the bay towards the Warren at 0940.
Mudbank - 20 Pale-bellied Brent Geese, 2 Dark-bellied Brent Geese and a first-summer Mediterranean Gull.

Early Purple Orchids at an Exmouth site.

  1. Stunning Early Purples- must get down to seethe ones at Ranmore Common near Dorking in the next couple of weeks. Unfortunately this Saturday looks a wash-out!

  2. Hi Neil - I'd originally planned to go further afield for Early Purples this spring, so was delighted to learn we had some in Exmouth - in a small area of woodland I'd never visited before. Friends of mine counted 74 plants recently.
    All the best. Matt
