4th-6th

Pintail x Wigeon hybrid - Mudbank. This bird was present last year too.

Disappointingly samey at the moment. Off Mudbank this evening - 12 Pale-bellied Brent Geese, 200+ Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 5 Black-tailed Godwits, 15 Bar-tailed Godwits, 3 Redshank, 1 Spotted Redshank, 1 Turnstone and 1 Kingfisher. Just after dawn 12 Cattle Egrets were scoped across the river, in with cattle behind Starcross. A quick look at the top fields on Orcombe produced 25+ Swallow, a flock of c80 Linnet, 2 Stonechats, 2 Kestrels and a fly-over Little Egret. A Clouded Yellow also of note.
Yesterday off Mudbank - 10 Black-tailed Godwits, 1 Spotted Redshank, 3 Redshank, 1 Turnstone and a Grey Plover. A Mediterranean Gull and 3 Stock Doves in a ploughed field off Maer Lane.
On the 4th - 26 Bar-tailed Godwits, 1 Spotted Redshank, 2 Redshank, 3 Greenshank, 1 Turnstone, 1 Mediterranean Gull and 2 Pale-bellied Brent Geese.

  1. Interesting hybrid there, Matt. The head looks almost Gadwall like. Had a few days in Norfolk the previous week so saw plenty of Dark-bellied Brents & even more Pinkfeet. You have good numbers of Cattle Egrets. We seem to have a resident pair at Rainham. About 3 weeks ago it was good to see 3 egret species there but the Greats have now moved on.

  2. Hi Neil - it's been years since I've been to Norfolk - really should make the effort to go again. There's a good sized Cattle Egret flock across the river but they're always very distant for me here in Exmouth. Still quite scarce within Exmouth itself. Good to hear from you as always. Hope the autumn delivers some good birds your way! All the best. Matt.
