Cattle Egrets

A flock of 30+ Cattle Egrets left their riverside roost, north of Starcross, at 8am. They flew up the valley behind Cockwood and disappeared from view.

Today's spell of (very cold) birding from the back garden produced 2 Red Kites (north upriver at 0742 and 0840), 30+ Cattle Egret, 5 Red-breasted Merganser, 37 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 2 Pheasant, 9 Black-headed Gull, 2 Chiffchaff, 1 Bar-tailed Godwit, 2 Canada Goose, 105+ Curlew, 1 Whimbrel, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 9+ Common Gull, 2 Sandwich Tern and 6 Mallard.

One of two Sandwich Terns on the river this morning.

  1. That's a great tally of Cattle Egrets, Matt. Hopefully some will breed locally .We've had a pair for a while now in the Lea Valley, but a much scarcer bird this side of the country.

Always great to see the first Sandwich Terns of the year. If the lockdown continues I'll have to miss them! Stay safe!
